Officials with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii, New Zealand and other small Pacific islands following apowerful earthquake in the Samoa Islands region.
The U.S. Geological Survey and the NOAA report that an earthquake measuring between 7.9 and 8.3 magnitude struck about 180 kilometers east of Tonga in the South Pacific. The earthquake had a depth of 35 kilometers.
No reports of damage or injuries have been reported so far. However, NOAA is reporting waves of up to 1.57 meters off the coasts of Apia, West Samoa and Pago Pago in American Samoa.
